“Astoria” is Greek for “food utopia,” evidently.

Yeah! The blogger returns. I can’t wait to read this … so that I can continue to live vicariously through your much more exciting adventures. I miss NYC!

Thanks. :) (But, seriously, teaching is pretty adventurous. Too adventurous for me.)

    So, who’s The Accidental Immigrant…You or J.?
The bakeries look great, but not as beautifully displayed as in Prague or Krems or Vienna or Paris or so many other places in Europe! The tradition in Spring Lake was to hit Vorhees Bakery after Sunday Mass…the only thing that saved us from being little fat kids was the beach and the ocean, climbing trees, riding our bikes, roller skating in October at the lake, pickup football, basketball and baseball. After Boy Scout meetings on Friday nights, we would go to Vorhees in the back, while the store was closed and while the bakers were at work, and they would give us all the free fresh donuts we could eat, thereby setting us on the road to being fat teenagers!
    Welcome back!

Now we know where Erin got her skills in writing. “Dad’s” contributions/comments are worth looking into the reborn blog!

Seems like my Spring Lake bakery memories are very faint (being 7 years younger than “Dad”), but I sure remember the Baltimore Bakeries! Silbers was the family favorite, and the absolute yummiest concoction there was their “drop cookies.” It was sort of a stiff but thin cake/cookie about 7 inches in diameter, with vanilla icing on one half of the top, and chocolate on the other. I can taste it now!

Yum. Well, everyone should come visit. Pastries for all.
